Electric riding, explained

Direct answers to the questions prospective riders ask most. Where an answer depends on the model or the country, we say so.

Is an eFoil more efficient than a jetboard?

Usually, once on foil. Lifting the hull clear of the water greatly reduces drag, so the same battery tends to last longer. Take-offs cost extra energy, so frequent falls narrow the gap. See propulsion.

Why is my real runtime shorter than the advertised figure?

Advertised runtimes are measured in favourable conditions. Higher rider weight, speed, chop, wind, cold and repeated starts all increase power draw. See battery range.

Can I take an electric board battery on a plane?

Generally not. Board packs exceed the 160 Wh limit for lithium-ion batteries in passenger baggage under IATA rules. They are usually shipped as dangerous goods by ground or sea.

How deep does the water need to be?

Jetboards can run in fairly shallow water as long as the intake stays clear of sand and weed. eFoils need depth greater than the mast length plus a margin, so check your mast specification.

Does saltwater damage electric boards?

Salt accelerates corrosion on connectors, fasteners and bearings. Rinse with fresh water after every session and dry connectors before storage.

What does an IP67 or IP68 rating mean?

IP codes come from IEC 60529. IP67 covers temporary immersion up to one metre for 30 minutes; IP68 covers conditions beyond that as specified by the manufacturer. Ratings usually apply to individual components when new and correctly sealed.

How should I store the battery over winter?

Follow the manual, which commonly recommends a partial charge, often around half, in a cool, dry place. Check the charge periodically.

Do I need a licence to ride an electric surfboard?

It depends on the jurisdiction. Some authorities classify electric boards as personal watercraft or vessels with licensing, registration or age rules; others do not. Check with the local maritime authority.

How do electric personal watercraft differ from electric surfboards?

Electric personal watercraft are larger seated or standing craft with enclosed jet pumps and much bigger battery packs, closer to combustion jet skis in use. Electric surfboards are lighter, rider-balanced and carry smaller removable packs. See the comparison table.
